Understanding Glaucoma
Glaucoma is a group of conditions that damage the optic nerve, most commonly as a result of elevated intraocular pressure. The optic nerve acts as the messenger between the eye and the brain, transmitting visual information that the brain interprets as sight. When sustained elevated pressure damages its fibers over time, the result is irreversible peripheral vision loss that, without appropriate management, progresses through the following stages:
- Blind spots in peripheral vision
- Tunnel vision
- Total blindness
Because glaucoma typically produces no pain or obvious symptoms in its early stages, many doctors have called it the silent thief of sight. Regular comprehensive eye exams are the primary means of detection, and early intervention is what makes the difference between preserved vision and permanent loss.
