What Is a Cataract?
The eye's natural lens sits behind the iris and is normally clear, allowing light to pass through and focus precisely on the retina. A cataract develops when proteins in the natural lens begin to break down and clump together, causing the lens to cloud gradually over time. Most cataracts are a natural result of aging and develop slowly, often over years, before producing noticeable vision changes.
They can also develop as a result of eye injury, certain medications, systemic conditions including diabetes, or prior eye surgery. The only effective treatment for cataracts is surgical removal and replacement with an artificial intraocular lens. No medication, drop, or supplement has been shown to reverse or halt cataract development.
