Cataract Surgery for Those Who Need It Most

Cataracts are one of the most treatable causes of vision loss in the world. The surgery that removes them takes less than 20 minutes, has an excellent safety record, and can restore independence, safety, and quality of life in ways that ripple through every aspect of a person's daily existence. And yet for uninsured patients without the means to cover the cost, that surgery can feel impossibly out of reach.

Operation Sight closes that gap. It is a program of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) through which a network of volunteer surgeons and organizations provides free cataract surgery to patients who qualify based on financial need.

At Boling Vision Center, our surgeons participate as member volunteers in this program, donating their time and expertise so that cost is never the reason a patient loses vision that could have been saved.

How Operation Sight Works

The program is straightforward by design, removing as many barriers as possible between an eligible patient and the surgery they need.

Eligibility

Operation Sight serves uninsured patients with an annual household income of less than 200 percent of the Federal poverty level. Patients who meet these criteria are matched with member volunteer surgeons through the program's network.

The Surgery

All cataract surgeries performed through Operation Sight are provided free of charge to the patient. Additional financial and administrative assistance, including support with the logistics of accessing care, is provided by ASCRS through the Operation Sight program infrastructure.

Our Role

Boling Vision Center's surgeons participate in Operation Sight as volunteer members, performing cataract surgeries for eligible patients at no cost. This participation reflects the same commitment that drives every aspect of our Kindness to Prevent Blindness program: that access to essential eye care should not be determined by financial circumstances.
