Leadership as a Living Thing

Leadership philosophies are easy to write and hard to live. At Boling Vision Center, ours has been shaped not by a framework borrowed from a business school textbook but by over 65 years of building something real: a practice where exceptional care, genuine culture, and lasting community impact have grown together because the people leading it have been intentional about what they were creating.

What we have learned across three generations of family leadership, and across the careers of the team members who have grown with this practice, is that leadership is not something a person does from the top of an organization. It lives at every level, in every interaction, in every decision made when the choice between convenient and right is in front of you.

What We Believe About Leadership

The convictions below are not aspirational. They are the principles we have found, through experience and through failure and through the long work of building something lasting, to be genuinely true about what leadership requires.

Culture Is Created, Not Inherited

At Boling Vision Center, we hold firmly to the belief that organizational culture is not something that happens to a practice. It is something that is built, deliberately and consistently, through the behaviors, priorities, and decisions of its leaders. A great culture does not sustain itself. It requires leaders at every level who understand that what they model is what the organization becomes.

This belief drives our investment in leadership development, our commitment to hiring people whose values align with ours, and our willingness to have the hard conversations that keep the culture honest.

People Come First

Exceptional guest experiences are the product of exceptional team experiences. A team that feels seen, supported, and genuinely invested in brings a different quality of presence to every interaction than a team that feels like a resource to be managed.

At Boling Vision Center, caring for our people is not a human resources strategy. It is an expression of the same values that guide our care for guests: integrity, compassion, and excellence. We believe that when leaders treat their teams the way they want their teams to treat guests, the outcome takes care of itself.

Leadership Is Service

The most effective leaders at Boling Vision Center are not the ones with the most authority. They are the ones who use whatever authority they have in service of the people around them, clearing obstacles, providing clarity, offering support, and creating the conditions in which others can do their best work.

This service orientation is what distinguishes leadership at Boling Vision Center from management. Management maintains. Leadership develops, inspires, and moves things forward.

Emotional Intelligence Is Non-Negotiable

Clinical skill, operational acumen, and strategic thinking all matter. But the leaders who have the most lasting impact at Boling Vision Center are the ones who combine those capabilities with a high degree of self-awareness, empathy, and the ability to navigate relationships with honesty and care.

We invest in developing emotional intelligence in our leaders because we believe it is the multiplier that makes everything else more effective, and because it is the quality that most directly shapes the experience of the people our leaders lead.

Where This Philosophy Comes From

The leadership philosophy at Boling Vision Center is inseparable from its history. Three generations of family leadership have modeled what it looks like to hold a practice together across decades of change without losing the values that made it worth building. The lessons embedded in that history, about integrity under pressure, about the long view, about what it means to genuinely serve a community, inform how we think about leadership at every level of the organization today.

CEO Hayley Boling has formalized and expanded on that foundation through her work as a Certified Practitioner of the Denison Model for Organizational Culture, her leadership of ASOA's LEAD Program, and her consulting work with healthcare organizations across the country. What she brings back to Boling Vision Center from that broader work consistently reinforces what the practice has always known: that culture and leadership are not separate from clinical excellence. They are what make it sustainable.

Leadership in Practice

A philosophy means nothing if it stays on a page. At Boling Vision Center, the beliefs described here are expressed in how we hire, how we develop our team, how we structure care, and how we make decisions when values and convenience point in different directions. The pages in this section explore how that philosophy comes to life across the practice: in the culture we have built, the team-based care model we have designed, the investments we make in our people, and the leadership development work we do both internally and in partnership with the broader eye care community. The standard we hold ourselves to is simple, and it is the same standard Dr. Richard Boling Sr. set when he opened his practice in Elkhart in 1960: do what is right, care for the people in front of you, and never stop trying to be better than you were yesterday.
