A Family Practice in the Truest Sense

The word "family" appears often in healthcare marketing. At Boling Vision Center, it means something specific. It means that the same family that founded this practice in 1960 is still leading it today. That the values instilled by the founder are the values that guide the third generation. That the guests who were seen by Dr. Richard Boling Sr. decades ago may now be seen by his granddaughter, Dr. Whitney Boling, and that the experience of care, the warmth, the thoroughness, the genuine attentiveness, feels continuous across that span of time.

That kind of continuity doesn't happen by accident. It is the product of deliberate choices, made generation after generation, to keep the practice independent, to keep the family involved, and to keep the standard of care personal.

Our Multi-Generational Legacy of Care

Boling Vision Center is one of the few ophthalmology practices in the country that has remained independently owned and operated across three generations of the same family, and that continuity is not incidental to who we are. It is the foundation of everything we have built.

Dr. Richard Boling Sr.

The First Generation: Dr. Richard Boling Sr. (B1)

Dr. Richard Boling Sr. opened his ophthalmology practice in Elkhart, Indiana in 1960 with a clear sense of purpose: to provide the families of Northern Indiana with the kind of eye care that treats the whole person, not just the presenting complaint.

A Different Kind of Practice

In a time when healthcare was becoming increasingly clinical and transactional, Dr. Boling Sr. insisted on something different. He believed that the relationship between a doctor and a patient was built on trust, and that trust was earned through attentiveness, honesty, and genuine care for the individual's well-being.

He made time for his patients. He knew their names, their families, and their lives. And he set a standard of care that was as much about how patients felt when they left his office as it was about the quality of their clinical outcome.

A Community Institution

Dr. Boling Sr. was a pioneer in his field and a respected figure in the Elkhart community, known for his surgical skill and for the integrity with which he practiced medicine. He built not just a successful practice but an institution, one that became woven into the fabric of the community it served.

The foundation he laid, clinically excellent, deeply personal, rooted in integrity, became the blueprint for everything that followed.

Dr. Richard Boling II

The Second Generation: Dr. Richard Boling II (B2)

Dr. Richard Boling II joined his father's practice and, in doing so, made a choice that defined the next chapter of Boling Vision Center's story: to build on the foundation his father created rather than replace it.

Surgical Excellence and Innovation

Dr. Boling II brought his own contributions to the practice and the field. He became one of the most experienced cataract surgeons in the Michiana region, performing over 25,000 cataract procedures over the course of his career. He was the first surgeon in Michiana to perform no-needle, no-stitch, no-patch cataract surgery, a milestone that reflected his commitment to pursuing the most advanced, patient-friendly techniques available.

Growing the Practice, Keeping the Culture

Under his leadership, the practice grew significantly. New locations opened, clinical capabilities deepened, and the team expanded, but the culture his father had established remained intact. Dr. Boling II understood that the most important inheritance a practice can pass on is not its equipment or its facilities but its values, and he tended to those values with the same care he brought to every surgical case.

Dr. Boling II currently serves as President and Chief Medical Officer of Boling Vision Center, a role that reflects both his clinical leadership and his ongoing stewardship of the practice's direction and standard of care.

Dr. Whitney Boling

The Third Generation: Dr. Whitney Boling (B3)

Dr. Whitney Boling represents the third chapter of a story that has now spanned more than six decades, and she brings to it both the inheritance of the family's legacy and the fresh perspective of a fellowship-trained ophthalmologist who has chosen, with full awareness of the alternatives, to practice where she grew up and to serve the community she loves.

A Diagnostic Approach Like No Other

Dr. Whitney Boling is known for the depth and breadth of her diagnostic approach. She asks questions that other providers don't think to ask. She pursues root causes rather than surface complaints.

She operates from the conviction that the eyes are a window into the body's broader health, and she has built a practice of looking through that window thoroughly, which has led to the detection of conditions including multiple sclerosis, Lyme disease, ocular tumors, and systemic inflammation during appointments that began as routine eye exams.

That diagnostic mindset is a direct expression of the family culture she was raised in: the belief that a patient sitting in the chair deserves the full attention and capability of the provider across from them, every time, without exception.

A Commitment That Goes Beyond the Clinic

Dr. Whitney Boling also embodies the practice's commitment to the community that extends beyond clinical care. Her involvement in Kindness to Prevent Blindness and her presence across all four locations reflect a practice model that is not built around efficiency metrics but around genuine relationships with the patients and the community the practice serves.

Leadership Beyond the Doctors

The multi-generational story of Boling Vision Center is not only the story of three generations of physicians. It is also the story of the leadership that has grown alongside them.

Hayley Boling serves as Chief Executive Officer of Boling Vision Center, bringing operational vision, strategic leadership, and a deep personal commitment to the practice's culture and future. Under her leadership, Boling Vision Center has invested in its digital presence, expanded its clinical capabilities, and deepened its community outreach, all while maintaining the independent, family-first character that defines the practice.

Hayley's leadership reflects the same belief that has guided Boling Vision Center across three generations: that a practice built on the right values, led by people who genuinely care about the guests they serve, will always find a way to do more, reach further, and make a greater difference in the community it calls home.

What Three Generations Have Built

Taken together, the three generations of the Boling family have built something that is genuinely rare in modern healthcare: a fully independent, deeply community-rooted ophthalmology practice that has grown in capability and reach without losing the personal, values-driven culture that made it worth growing in the first place.

Today, Boling Vision Center includes four Northern Indiana locations, over 115 team members, an on-site Joint Commission-certified surgery center, an in-house optical lab, and a nonprofit mobile eye care program that has restored sight and dignity to thousands of community members who might otherwise have gone without care.

None of that happened because of a corporate acquisition or a hospital affiliation. It happened because three generations of one family chose, over and over again, to invest in the community they serve, to hold to the values they inherited, and to believe that amazing things happen when clinical excellence and genuine human care are present in the same room.

The Legacy Continues

The story of Boling Vision Center is still being written. The guests who walked through our doors in 1960 could not have imagined the technology, the scale, or the reach of the practice that exists today. And the practice that exists today cannot fully anticipate what the next generation will build.

What will not change is the foundation: the commitment to integrity, compassion, and excellence that Dr. Richard Boling Sr. built into the practice's DNA more than 65 years ago, and that has been renewed by every generation since.

The families of Michiana deserve a practice that treats them like family. For over 65 years, that has been our promise.

It remains our promise today.

Amazing Happens Here

Three generations. One unwavering standard.
