Children's Vision: Why It Matters
Vision is involved in roughly eighty percent of everything a child learns, experiences, and interacts with in the world. It shapes how they read, how they play, how they connect with others, and how they engage in the classroom.
When vision problems go undetected, the consequences reach well beyond blurry eyesight. Children with uncorrected vision conditions often struggle academically, develop behavioral challenges that can be mistaken for attention or learning difficulties, and miss out on experiences that depend on clear, comfortable sight.
The encouraging reality is that most pediatric eye conditions are highly treatable, and early detection consistently produces the best outcomes. The earlier a problem is identified, the more the visual system can do with the right intervention.
When Should My Child See an Eye Doctor?
The American Optometric Association recommends the following schedule for comprehensive pediatric eye exams:
- 6 months: A child's first comprehensive eye exam, evaluating early visual development and screening for conditions that can affect the developing visual system.
- Age 3: A pre-school exam to assess visual acuity, eye alignment, and early signs of amblyopia or refractive error before the critical developmental window narrows.
- Age 6 and annually thereafter: Annual exams throughout the school years to monitor vision, detect any emerging conditions, and ensure that glasses or contact lenses remain appropriately prescribed.
Earlier or more frequent exams are recommended when there is a family history of amblyopia, strabismus, or significant refractive error, when a pediatrician or school screening flags a concern, or when a parent notices any signs of a potential vision problem.
A note on school screenings: School vision screenings are not a substitute for a comprehensive eye exam. They test a limited range of visual functions and frequently miss significant conditions, including farsightedness, astigmatism, and early amblyopia. If your child has only ever had a school screening, a comprehensive exam is the right next step.
Pediatric Eye Exams at Boling Vision Center
A pediatric eye exam at Boling Vision Center is thorough, age-appropriate, and designed to put young patients at ease from the moment they arrive. Our exams evaluate visual acuity in each eye individually, eye alignment and movement, binocular function and depth perception, refractive error, and the health of the eye structures from front to back. For children too young to read a chart or respond verbally, we use specialized testing techniques designed for every developmental stage, from preferential looking assessments for infants to picture-based testing for toddlers and preschoolers. Dilation is an important part of many pediatric exams, particularly for young children, as it allows accurate measurement of refractive error and a complete view of the internal eye structures. Our team explains every step of the process to children and parents alike, and we take whatever time is needed to ensure the experience is as comfortable as possible.

How Vision Affects Learning
Approximately eighty percent of classroom learning relies on vision, and children with undetected vision problems can face significant challenges with reading, writing, and concentration that have nothing to do with intelligence or effort. These children are sometimes identified as having attention or behavioral difficulties when the real issue is a vision problem, making sustained visual work genuinely difficult or uncomfortable.

Common vision-related learning challenges include difficulty tracking across a line of text, losing place while reading, skipping or repeating words, short attention span for close visual tasks, and complaints of headaches or eye fatigue after schoolwork.
When to Seek an Evaluation
A comprehensive eye exam is always the right first step when a child is struggling academically or when a teacher raises concerns. Correcting an underlying vision problem can transform a child's classroom experience, and it's always worth ruling out before pursuing other explanations.

Amblyopia (Lazy Eye)
The most common cause of vision impairment in children, amblyopia occurs when the brain and one eye fail to develop a strong visual connection during the critical developmental period. It is very treatable when identified early, with outcomes that improve the sooner intervention begins.
Strabismus (Eye Alignment)
A condition in which the eyes don't point in the same direction, strabismus affects roughly four percent of children and carries a significant risk of amblyopia if left untreated. Treatment options range from glasses and patching to surgical correction of the eye muscles.
Refractive Errors
Myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism are the most common vision conditions in children. Many children with significant refractive errors show no obvious symptoms, making routine exams essential for detection and early correction.
Eye Infections and Irritations
From conjunctivitis and styes to allergic eye disease and blocked tear ducts, childhood eye infections and irritations are among the most common reasons families seek eye care. We evaluate and treat the full range of these conditions promptly and thoroughly.

Aches and pains are a part of all college athletes’ every day lives; however, I didn’t realize that painful and annoying contact lenses didn’t have to be! I used to fight the constant irritation of contacts every day, worrying that they might fall out or tear … especially during allergy season. This is no longer a worry for me now that I’ve had my LASIK by Dr. Boling! Although track seasons are a thing of the past for me, I’m now running in challenges called ” Tough Mudders” – 10-12 mile hardcore obstacle courses designed by British Special Forces to test strength, stamina, mental grit, and camaraderie while tackling obstacles such as 12 foot walls, underground mud tunnels, fire, ice-water, and 10,000 volts of electricity! Talk about aches and pains! I would have never even dreamed of getting through a race like that without my contacts posing a major problem … but now I don’t even give it a second thought! And the best part was how easy the entire LASIK process was for me. The procedure was completely painless, the staff was so nice and helpful, and they answered every question I could think of before I even had the chance to ask! We had a very positive experience with Dr.Steven Sorenson. About a week ago, he removed a tiny metal piece from my son’s eye. My son was very scared, crying, and constantly trying to pull away, but the doctor was extremely patient and calm with him throughout the entire procedure.
He showed not only a high level of professionalism but also genuine care and kindness. He truly wanted to help and did everything he possibly could to make the procedure as safe and comfortable as possible.
Thanks to his skill and patience, we were able to avoid general anesthesia, which was a huge relief for us as parents. We are very grateful for his help and would highly recommend him.

He was funny and really patient. I appreciate places not rushing us. It took several tries to dilate her eyes and he was very positive with her and did great calming her down. I don’t often leave reviews but knew I needed to after we left. We really felt taken care of! Alyssa helped us as well and her recommendations were so appreciated.

Give me a trial contacts which I could not see out of that left me with no contacts at all I had to call and desperately get some contacts so I could see Then I went back to my prior prescription and explains and paid for contacts which I’m still waiting on a refund that this has been since November of this year they still owe me $160 terribly terribly dissatisfied. The lady who initially saw me was very nice the young girl, however, the contact assistant Very confrontational I had to bite my lips, especially with my name being Karen I didn’t wanna be a Karen but I felt like I got nowhere. Made an Appointment with a new optician at the beginning of the year since I’ve used this year services to no avail at Boling center I will keep you posted on what they find out right now. I’m still using my prescription from two years ago and I see perfectly but not with their ones Dr. Kevin Egan gave Terrible terrible service can I say? Rhonda who is the team executive assistance for Customer service reached out to me the other day we had a nice conversation she more than made me satisfied so I’m changing my review to a five been in Customer service over 40 years. This lady who’s been in Customer service over 12 is what Customer service is all about. She made edit sure that I was taken care of both financially and with contacts and because of this, I will resume going there however I will go back to my original doctor Sorensonand that is noted on my chart and I just want to say Boling Vision team. Rhonda is amazing. definitely deserves a raise. Thank you Rhonda from the bottom of my heart.💜 5 stars for sure

My eye was red on Saturday and I began to use Visine.) Holiday weekend). I called Boling on Tuesday morning and Ronisha took my call and advised me to stop using the Visine because it would make it worse, which it had - to use my regular eye drops that I had been using. She was professional, caring, and very right.
(2 days later) I had ordered glasses that I went to pick up glasses at Boling and to thank Ronisha for her work and personal effort but I could not talk to her directly.
Thank you Ronisha!

Would like to highlight Gilbert who went above and beyond making us feel comfortable even getting my husband a wheelchair and helping him out to the car. It was the best decision! Not only was my phone call a wonderful experience, but going in and meeting the experience coordinator Cindy was out of this world. I went in today for a LASIK consultation and Cindy was the most helpful person ever. She really helps educate on the eye so you know exactly what they’re looking for in a candidate and also just gives you a little eye anatomy which I thought was super cool. She was the sweetest and most kind soul. She really loves her job and you can feel the passion when she educates you. 10/10 would recommend getting a consultation with Cindy!

From the first person I encountered at Boling vision I could tell this was a purpose driven culture focused organization. Everyone there is amazing kind and helpful. Lasik was what brought me to Boling and I can image anyone doing it better. The pre-operation visits were insightful and left me feeling at ease. The day of my procedure I started feeling nervous but that quickly when away when I arrived. Everyone did an amazing job making me feel calm and comfortable. The procedure truly is quick and painless. My appointment was at noon and I was at home in south bend eating pizza at 1:45. Today is my first day since my procedure and my vision is amazing. No pain or discomfort at all. My one day follow up was at the south bend south side location and they had me in and out in no time. They even help me fix my sunglasses that I had sat on a few weeks prior. Thank you to everyone!

Chelsea and Kate were so kind, patience, and very compassionate with my mother. Dr. Heil was very comforting while explaining the procedure. After the speedy procedure we stopped at the cafe for beverages and Zee was warm and welcoming.

I was apprehensive at first but my fears and apprehensive feelings were quickly squashed and dissipated by the very professionalism, congeniality, and caring of Dr. Boling and his surgical staff and preparation team. I have been always treated like family and made to feel comfortable and informed during the process and the follow-up visits and examinations by my other doctors and technicians. I always recommend Boling Vision Center to anyone needing any type of optometry advice or treatment. Also, DeAshton in the frame dept was awesome. Extremely, helpful and assisted me in locating a replacement frame they don't carry, for a pair of my broken Marchon glasses' lenses that they had serviced in the past. Now that is excellent costumer service.
From 2 years ago: I really appreciate the excellent customer service and fantastic doctors and staff. Today's visit was made even better because Michele at the checkout desk was so helpful and patient with me.

When they say ‘Amazing happens here’ they are not scamming you!!! I had the pleasure of knowing them from them treating my mother & they were able to keep her vision until she passed, which was not what we got elsewhere. Now my hubby had a retinal hemorrhage & they have went out of their way to try & find what will work to fix it. He hasn’t been an easy treatment, but they have been doing everything possible. They are personable & the doctors & staff are the sweetest. HIGHLY RECOMMEND

The staff is very professional and friendly. I am treated like a human with a problem that needs to be fixed. When we talk about options the doctor doesn’t use technical terms he talks to me like a person who is concerned and is willing to figure out what needs to be done. Whatever test he suggests to have done, I do it, and they set those tests up to have done. I love that they keep up on new technology to help, not just myself, but people with problems. I always tell people at work about Boling Vision Center and will continue to tell people that I strongly recommend them.

When I came in for my consultation, Cindy greeted me, did my consultation and informed me I was not a candidate for lasik, but explained, in depth, the ICL surgery that I did qualify for. I was absolutely EXCITED, and wanted to hear all about it. Cindy blew me away with how much knowledge she had on the procedure. I left my consultation with happy tears in my eyes that FINALLY I could get my vision corrected. I was nervous, but so excited at the same time. When I came in for my final appointment before surgery for my lens fitting, I got to meet Dr. Richard Boling. From the moment Dr. Boling walked in, and greeted me, it really sealed the deal that I made the right decision. Dr. Boling answered every question I had, and did not rush my visit at all. Surgery day, I was nervous, but so excited. I knew that after all my research, if i was going to go anywhere, it was to Boling. The reviews and testimonies speak for themselves. Each and every staff member on the surgery team treated me like I was family. From beginning to end of my surgery they were right by my side. As soon as I heard Dr. Bolings voice as he came in to start my surgery I was so excited knowing in just a couple hours, I'd be seeing like I've never saw my whole life. I could barely contain my excitement. He checked each eye after surgery to make sure the lens placement was perfect, and after surgery I was offered an array of snacks and drinks to hold me over until I was discharged. I came in for my 1 day post op appointment, to be told I AM ALREADY SEEING 20/20 less than 24 hours after surgery! I was a -7.50 in my left eye, and a -2.50 in my right. I've never in my life seen even close to 20/20 with my glasses or contacts.
I want to say THANK YOU to Taylor, an employee who originally told me about there being more options than just lasik here at Boling.
I'd also like to thank Cindy, for being one of the best humans I've ever met. Cindy is the whole reason I even had this life changing surgery. Her compassion and TRUE LOVE for everyone she meets is so beautiful. She knows every detail of all of the surgeries, and really cares about each person she meets with. She doesnt read off of a paper to tell you, it is a real conversation, of her explaining everything offered in detail. I felt like family sitting with her, sharing emotional moments, and the pure JOY when she saw my eyes light up over the ICL surgery. I actually saw her at my post op appointment, and was able to hug her and thank her for being the reason I felt so comfortable moving foward with the surgery and to tell her I'm seeing 20/20 ALREADY!!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH CINDY! You are SUCH a vital part of the Boling Family, and I hope everyone knows what a special place you hold in the hearts of the everyone after consultations. It was important to me, to see you in person, and SHOW YOU, you changed my life. Thank you so much again.
The biggest THANK YOU to you, Dr. Boling! Never in a million years did I think I'd ever see 20/20 in any way, shape, or form. The ICL surgery has already blown me away, and it's only been 48 hours since surgery. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for improving my quality of life, and showing me a whole new world with my new eyes. I will forever be grateful for this procedure. The whole staff at Boling is amazing. It's just an amazing experience from start to finish with everyone in the building.
If you are on the fence about a consultation, or doing a corrective vision surgery, this is your sign to DO IT. Dr. Boling and the rest of the team are top in the nation ( trust me after reading their reviews I would of traveled across the country for Dr. Richard Boling to complete my surgery. I just got lucky that he was only 30 min from my home. ) I couldn't be happier with this procedure, from consultation to surgery day. Thank you to the whole Boling team! I want to say THANK YOU to Taylor, an employee who originally told me about there being more options than just lasik here at Boling.
I'd also like to thank Cindy, for being one of the best humans I've ever met. Cindy is the whole reason I even had this life changing surgery. Her compassion and TRUE LOVE for everyone she meets is so beautiful. She knows every detail of all of the surgeries, and really cares about each person she meets with. She doesnt read off of a paper to tell you, it is a real conversation, of her explaining everything offered in detail. I felt like family sitting with her, sharing emotional moments, and the pure JOY when she saw my eyes light up over the ICL surgery. I actually saw her at my post op appointment, and was able to hug her and thank her for being the reason I felt so comfortable moving foward with the surgery and to tell her I'm seeing 20/20 ALREADY!!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH CINDY! You are SUCH a vital part of the Boling Family, and I hope everyone knows what a special place you hold in the hearts of the everyone after consultations. It was important to me, to see you in person, and SHOW YOU, you changed my life. Thank you so much again.
The biggest THANK YOU to you, Dr. Boling! Never in a million years did I think I'd ever see 20/20 in any way, shape, or form. The ICL surgery has already blown me away, and it's only been 48 hours since surgery. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for improving my quality of life, and showing me a whole new world with my new eyes. I will forever be grateful for this procedure. The whole staff at Boling is amazing. It's just an amazing experience from start to finish with everyone in the building.
If you are on the fence about a consultation, or doing a corrective vision surgery, this is your sign to DO IT. Dr. Boling and the rest of the team are top in the nation ( trust me after reading their reviews I would of traveled across the country for Dr. Richard Boling to complete my surgery. I just got lucky that he was only 30 min from my home. ) I couldn't be happier with this procedure, from consultation to surgery day. Thank you to the whole Boling team! First, they take away half your vision and ask you to read big ol letters, get you all confident.
Then, they make the letters smaller and smaller and keep asking you to read it w your BAD eye! What a joke.
Didnt help that all the letters looked the same and were out of focus more for my bad eye. Prolly on purpose. I suspect some were in Spanish too. Yeah, i know.
Id go back, i guess, but im gonna ask them to use easier, bigger letters next time. Or maybe colors or shapes, instead.
All i have to say is we ARE lucky boling vision isnt in charge of street signs. Wed ALL have to stop, get out the car, go read the street sign in 1/4 inch font, get BACK in the car, and turn. Every time. Yeah, i KNOW, right?!?!

This was my first visit to the Elkhart Office. From check in to initial examination then my time with Dr.Walker and time spent picking out new glasses and the final check out it was an excellent experience. Dr.Walker was thorough and clear in his examination and explanation. Everyone was friendly courteous and easy to deal with. Picking out new frames was a delightful experience . I highly recommend them as your eye care provider.

A+++ review here! I needed cataract surgery and had heard great things about this place. Dr. Richard Boling performed the surgery with the newest multi-focal lens on both eyes a week apart. It has been 3 months since the surgery, and my vision kept getting better and better (you need to be patient), and NOW my vision is crystal clear for distance and reading. I am extremely happy with the result. The experience was pleasant because everyone there was so caring and professional. Dr. Richard Boling performed a miracle for me. I had worn glasses since I was 9 years old...thick glasses. Ha!

My son needed an extensive exam and they were very good about keeping us informed throughout. I was also impressed with all the in-house technology. Generally I leave the doctors office feeling cheated and disrespected but not the case here . Each and every person we delt with had a big smile on their face and they were all so friendly. Other doctors offices should model their practices after Boling and pay more attention to how they treat their patients / customers. I would recommend Boling Vision Center to anyone.

He has now recommended that I have laser surgery. I do not dread this, because I know the Boling team is the best!

After experiencing injections at another office, and the emotional toll, not to mention the irritation to my eyes, CHANGING to Boling was THE BEST. Before it would take up to 4 hours, but with you guys, I'm out in less than an hour and besides being dilated, would never know I had just had an injection. Thank you

Where do I start with this review? I called the Elkhart office earlier than their normal hours, but close enough that someone answered the phone. I was in absolute excruciating pain, so much so, I was bawling. The woman on the other end of the phone immediately knew something was very wrong. Her empathy, kindness, and extreme care immediately kicked in. She immediately asked me what facility I was closest to, if I had someone to drive me, and let me know that she set up an immediate appointment. She calmed me down, and was able to let me know that I would be in the best of hands. I showed up to the Goshen location, and was immediately taken back to a room. A virus was attacking my eye. Medication drops & gel were immediately given to me, and a plan of attack was set in place.
The next day, I received a phone call from the woman that answered the phone, when I was so desperate for help. She wanted to check to see how I was doing, and that I had been heavy on her heart since my call. She said she prayed for me, and just wanted to make sure I was feeling better. She was an ANGEL! She did not have to call me the next day, and check on me, but she did. She far exceeded my expectations with her care, love and compassion for me. Tylar Lochmandy was her name, and she exemplifies the beauty of what love, compassion, and care truly is. She has restored my faith in humanity! She deserves to know how truly wonderful she is, and how appreciative I am for her. Keep up the wonderful work, Tylar! You are amazing!

Dr. Walker does an excellent job of anticipating areas of question or concern and educates accordingly. Best of all, I never leave feeling my questions were unanswered. So glad I had my Lasix performed through Boling Vision.

Boling Vision Center exceeded my expectations. I scheduled a lasik consultation at another facility and after waiting months for my consultation they canceled my appointment on the day of. I called Boling and they were able to get me in the next day! Cindy was so kind and patient and has a wealth of knowledge which she eagerly shared making me feel so comfortable and excited to schedule my Lasik surgery. Cindy is so good at her job that my husband now is also interested in Lasik.

I have been having issues with my eyes for the past 20 years. In all of those years I have never felt like I have to launched coming to Boling Vision Center. I have met so many people that have not only helped me, but have genuinely cared about me and my eye care. First, Leanne. If she wouldn’t of advocated for BVC I wouldn’t of found my home and be where I am today. Dr. Layman has been amazing and advocated for me. Dr. Whitney Boling has also been amazing. Her guidance was so helpful and for that I am so thankful. And lastly, Katie. Although shes sometimes the person we dread because we know we’re going to have to talk money, I instantly loved her. She was so happy for me and I enjoyed talking with her so much! Though I don’t know everyone’s names who I have been ncountered they’ve all been amazing. So thank you so much BVC! In any event, it was my first time with Dr. Reilly. She was excellent- knowledgeable, knew my history, and was very thorough with my exam. Will definitely go back to her.
It is 2025; I have continued to go to Dr. Reilly and she continues to impress. After the last exam, my prescription changed and I decided to get new glasses. I ordered 2 pairs of top of the line progressive lens glasses- one through insurance which used a lab in their network, and one from Boling's lab. The outside lab made Shamir Auto intel fixed IS lenses while Boling made IOT Camber lenses. The difference was stark. The IOT was so much better I couldn't believe it. I had the optical tech recheck the Shamir lenses to make sure the prescription was correct because they were so inferior. The prescription was correct. I decided to spend extra money and have the second pair remade in IOT Camber even though it had been covered by insurance initially. If anyone has the option to get IOT Camber, I highly recommend it. Having had the luxury of being able to do a direct comparison of identical glasses including frames made by both types of methods, I can assure you that the IOT Camber is far superior.

Your eyes are too precious to go to cut rate optical clinics. At Boling I know I’m in the best state of the art eye care facility’. Dr Boling also has a very professional but friendly staff. We drive a bit of a distance to go to Boling but it’s well worth the drive. It’s not possible in my opinion to find a better more qualified eye care center anywhere. I’m very thankful we found them.

Jackie took us together thru the different “stations” which I appreciated so I could hear what was going on with my husband's eyes & vice versa. Jackie was delightful & didn’t hesitate with answers to our questions & she wrote down the questions I had for Dr Egan. She was efficient, once we were placed in a room, when going thru the eye chart for each eye, including close & far away and the “puff test.” Jackie explained everything she was doing before it happened & why. The thing I most appreciated was that Jackie took the time to review each of our med lists & took out those that were obsolete & added new ones that took their place. When Dr Egan

I can't say enough good about Dr. Boling and his staff. After a freak home remodeling accident that punctured my wife's eye, the Boling team got us in even though they had closed for the weekend. Do you see infants and toddlers?
Yes. We see children from six months of age onward and are experienced in examining very young children using techniques specifically designed for their developmental stage. A child doesn't need to be able to read a chart or answer questions for us to get accurate, meaningful information about their vision.
What if my child is anxious about eye exams?
We hear this often, and our team is genuinely experienced with anxious young patients. We take extra time, explain every step before we do it, and create an environment that's as calm and welcoming as possible. If your child has particular anxieties about medical appointments, let us know when you schedule so we can prepare accordingly. Our goal is for every child to leave feeling good about their experience.
Can you detect amblyopia in a child who seems to see fine?
Yes, and this is exactly why comprehensive exams matter. Many children with amblyopia appear to see normally because they're using their stronger eye effectively. The weaker eye's reduced vision often goes unnoticed by the child and their parents until it's identified through testing that evaluates each eye individually.
My child was diagnosed with myopia. What can be done to slow its progression?
For children with progressing myopia, myopia management strategies, including orthokeratology, multifocal contact lenses, and low-dose atropine, can help slow the rate of progression and reduce the long-term risks associated with high myopia. This is worth discussing at your next appointment if your child's prescription is changing quickly or if they developed myopia at a young age.
