Appointment Questions Frequently Asked Questions
How do I schedule an appointment at Boling Vision Center?
New and returning patients can schedule by calling any of our four Northern Indiana locations directly or by requesting an appointment online through our website. Our scheduling team will help identify the right appointment type, location, and provider for your needs.
Do I need a referral to be seen at Boling Vision Center?
No referral is required for any of our services. You're welcome to schedule directly at any of our locations. If you've been referred by another provider, we're happy to coordinate with them as part of your care team.
How early should I arrive for my appointment?
We recommend arriving 10 to 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment time. If you haven't completed new patient forms in advance, plan to arrive 15 minutes early to allow time for in-office completion.
How long will my appointment take?
It depends on the type of visit. A routine comprehensive eye exam typically takes 45 minutes to an hour. Specialty consultations and pre-operative evaluations typically take one to one and a half hours. Surgical appointments at INSIGHT Surgery Center require a total visit of approximately two to three hours. Our team will give you a realistic time estimate when you schedule.
What is your cancellation policy?
We ask that guests provide at least 24 hours notice for standard appointment cancellations and at least 48 hours notice for surgical appointments. Late cancellations and repeated no-shows may result in a fee and can affect future scheduling. If you need to reschedule, please contact us as early as possible.
Can I choose my provider?
Yes. If you have a preference for a specific provider, let us know when you schedule, and we will do our best to accommodate your request. If you're unsure which provider is best suited to your needs, our scheduling team is happy to make a recommendation.
Insurance Questions Frequently Asked Questions
What insurance plans does Boling Vision Center accept?
We accept a wide range of vision and medical insurance plans, including VSP, EyeMed, Medicare, Medicaid, and most major medical plans. For a current and complete list of accepted plans, please call any of our locations, and our billing team will confirm your coverage.
What is the difference between vision and medical insurance for eye care?
Vision insurance typically covers routine exams, glasses, and contact lenses. Medical insurance covers the diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases, including glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and dry eye disease. Some visits involve both types of coverage, depending on what is addressed. Our billing team ensures claims are submitted appropriately to maximize your benefits.
Can I use my FSA or HSA at Boling Vision Center?
Yes. FSA and HSA funds can be used for eye exams, prescription eyewear, contact lenses, medically necessary treatments, and certain elective procedures. FSA and HSA cards are accepted at all four of our locations.
What if my insurance doesn't cover a service I need?
Our team will let you know the out-of-pocket cost before proceeding so you can make an informed decision. Flexible financing options are available for elective procedures and premium upgrades to help make costs more manageable.
Will I receive a bill after my appointment?
If a balance remains after your insurance has processed your claim, you will receive a statement by mail. If you have questions about a statement, contact our billing team promptly, and we will work to address them.
Surgery Questions Frequently Asked Questions
Where are surgical procedures performed?
All surgical procedures at Boling Vision Center are performed at INSIGHT Surgery Center, our on-site Joint Commission-certified ambulatory surgery center dedicated exclusively to ophthalmic care. INSIGHT is located within our practice, ensuring seamless continuity between your clinical care and your surgical experience.
Will I be awake during my procedure?
Most ophthalmic procedures are performed with the guest awake but comfortable, using topical anesthesia, conscious sedation, or a combination of both, depending on the procedure. You will not experience pain, and our team will keep you informed and reassured throughout. The specific anesthesia approach for your procedure is discussed at your pre-operative appointment.
Do I need someone to drive me home after surgery?
Yes. A designated driver is required for all procedures involving sedation. We recommend arranging transportation in advance and confirming your driver before your surgery day.
How do I prepare for surgery?
Your pre-operative appointment includes detailed, procedure-specific preparation instructions. General guidelines include discontinuing contact lens wear as directed, avoiding eye makeup on surgery day, following any prescribed pre-operative drop regimen, and arranging a driver. Full preparation guidance is available on our Surgery & Procedure Preparation page.
What if I have concerns during my recovery?
Our team is accessible between visits for any questions or concerns that arise during recovery. You will receive direct contact information for your care team before leaving INSIGHT on surgery day. Do not hesitate to call if something doesn't feel right.
Emergency Questions Frequently Asked Questions
What counts as an eye emergency?
Conditions that warrant same-day emergency evaluation include sudden vision loss, a significant increase in floaters or new flashes of light, severe eye pain, chemical exposure, eye injuries, a red and painful eye in a contact lens wearer, and significant eyelid swelling. When in doubt, call us, and our team will help assess the urgency of your situation.
What should I do in an eye emergency after hours?
Call our main number after hours to reach our after-hours answering service, which will connect you with our on-call provider for triage and guidance. For suspected penetrating injuries, chemical exposures, or situations involving severe pain and sudden vision loss, go directly to the nearest emergency room rather than waiting.
What should I do immediately after a chemical splash to the eye?
Flush the eye immediately and continuously with clean water for at least 15 to 20 minutes before seeking care. Do not wait to see if symptoms improve. After irrigation, call us or proceed to the nearest emergency room for evaluation.
Can I come in as a new patient for an emergency concern?
Yes. We see new patients for urgent and emergency concerns and will do our best to accommodate you the same day. When you call, let our team know the nature of your emergency so we can triage appropriately and get you in as quickly as possible.
