Culture Is the Work

There is a version of organizational culture that exists only on paper: polished values statements, framed prints in the lobby, language that sounds right in a brochure but bears little resemblance to what actually happens inside the organization. That is not the culture at Boling Vision Center.

Our culture is the product of deliberate, ongoing effort, shaped by leadership behaviors, hiring decisions, training investments, and the daily standards that keep values alive between performance reviews. CEO Hayley Boling, a Certified Practitioner of the Denison Model for Organizational Culture, has brought rigor and intentionality to how we understand and develop it. The result is a practice where culture is not a byproduct. It is a strategic priority.

Our Three Core Values in Action

Boling Vision Center's culture is anchored by three core values: integrity, compassion, and excellence. These are not abstract ideals. They are expressed in specific, observable behaviors that guests experience, and team members live every day.

Integrity in Action

Integrity shows up in the honest conversations we have with guests about their options, even when honesty isn't the most profitable path. It shows up in the provider who tells a guest they aren't a good candidate for a procedure rather than scheduling a surgery that isn't in their best interest. It shows up in the team member who owns a mistake rather than deflects it.

It also shows up in our independence. As a fully locally owned, family-operated practice, we have chosen, deliberately and repeatedly, not to be acquired or affiliated with a corporate parent. That independence is an act of integrity: a commitment to answering solely to our guests and our community.

Compassion in Action

Compassion at Boling Vision Center lives in the details most healthcare organizations don't bother with. The homemade cookies in the waiting room. The team member who notices an anxious guest and takes a moment to sit with them. The provider who asks about symptoms from head to toe because they want to understand the whole person.

It also shows up in the nonprofit mobile eye care unit we launched because the community we serve includes people who can't afford the care we provide, and that felt like something that needed to be fixed. And it shows up in how we treat our own team, because a team that feels genuinely cared for brings a different quality of presence to every guest interaction.

Excellence in Action

Excellence at Boling Vision Center is a direction, not a destination. It shows up in the refusal to accept good enough when better is possible: in the advanced diagnostic technology that detects subtle changes years before standard examination would reveal them, in the surgical innovation that made us the first practice in Michiana to perform no-needle, no-stitch, no-patch cataract surgery, and in the decision to staff more heavily than the norm because attentive care takes time.

Excellence in action also means excellence in failure: the willingness to acknowledge when something fell short, learn from it honestly, and do better. A practice that can't do that has confused the appearance of excellence with the real thing.

Amazing Happens Here

The phrase that has become synonymous with Boling Vision Center did not come from a marketing campaign. It came from the guests themselves, who used the word again and again to describe what they experienced here.

In the Big Moments and the Small Ones

Amazing is not reserved for the dramatic moments: the surgery that restored a grandmother's independence, the exam that caught a systemic disease before it caused irreversible harm. It happens in the ordinary ones too: in the guest who feels genuinely heard, in the child who puts on their first pair of glasses and laughs with surprise at the clarity of the world, in the team member who chooses to go the extra step because the culture they work in has made that the natural thing to do.

The Natural Outcome of a Purposeful Culture

Amazing happens here because the people who work here have been hired for their values, developed in their skills, and led by leaders who model the standard they expect. It is not a goal we pursue independently of everything else. It is the natural outcome of a culture that takes integrity, compassion, and excellence seriously, not as words but as ways of being.

Culture as a Competitive Advantage

At Boling Vision Center, we have come to understand that culture is not separate from clinical and operational performance. It is what sustains it.

Practices can acquire technology. They can hire skilled providers. They can build facilities. What cannot be easily replicated is a culture that has been built over decades, shaped by consistent leadership, and expressed so thoroughly in the daily behavior of the team that it has become the natural way things are done here.

That culture is Boling Vision Center's most durable competitive advantage, and it is the thing we are most committed to protecting as we grow, because we know that the moment a practice stops tending to its culture is the moment it starts becoming something different from what it set out to be.

Living the Values Every Day

Culture is ultimately made or broken in the small moments: the choice to be honest when honesty is inconvenient, the decision to take an extra five minutes with a guest who needs reassurance, the refusal to cut a corner that no one would notice anyway. At Boling Vision Center, those small moments accumulate across hundreds of interactions every day, across four locations and over 115 team members, into something larger than any single decision or any single person.

They accumulate into a practice that guests describe as amazing, that team members describe as the best place they have ever worked, and that the community of Michiana has trusted with their vision for over 65 years.

That is what culture in action looks like. And it is what we are committed to, every day, without exception.
