Retinal vascular disease encompasses a range of distinct conditions, each with its own causes, progression, and treatment considerations. Below is an overview of the primary conditions our Medical Retina Center diagnoses and manages.
Retinal Vein Occlusion
Retinal vein occlusion occurs when one of the veins carrying blood away from the retina becomes blocked. This causes blood and fluid to back up into the retinal tissue, leading to swelling, hemorrhage, and vision loss.
There are two primary types. Central retinal vein occlusion affects the main drainage vein and can impact the entire visual field. Branch retinal vein occlusion affects a smaller vein and typically causes vision loss in a specific area of sight.
Symptoms can range from sudden, significant vision loss to more gradual blurring, depending on which vein is involved and how severely. Treatment is focused on reducing swelling, managing pressure, and preventing further damage.
Retinal Artery Occlusion
Retinal artery occlusion is one of the most urgent conditions in eye care. When the artery supplying blood to the retina becomes blocked, retinal tissue begins to die within minutes without adequate oxygen.
Central retinal artery occlusion affects the entire retina and can cause sudden, profound vision loss in the affected eye. Branch retinal artery occlusion affects a portion of the retina and may cause a corresponding area of vision loss.
Because retinal artery occlusion can also be a warning sign of stroke or other serious cardiovascular events, it requires immediate medical attention beyond the eye itself. Our team takes these presentations with the urgency they deserve.
Diabetic Retinopathy
Diabetic retinopathy is the most common retinal vascular disease and the leading cause of vision loss among working-age adults. It develops when chronically elevated blood sugar damages the tiny blood vessels of the retina, causing them to leak, swell, or grow abnormally.
In its early stages, diabetic retinopathy may produce no symptoms at all. As it progresses, guests may notice blurring, floaters, or dark areas in their vision. Advanced cases can involve significant hemorrhage or retinal detachment.

Hypertensive Retinopathy
Chronic high blood pressure places ongoing stress on the retinal blood vessels, causing them to narrow, thicken, and eventually leak. Hypertensive retinopathy develops gradually and is often detected during a routine eye exam before a guest is even aware that their blood pressure is poorly controlled.
Findings in the retina can also help gauge the severity and duration of hypertension, making the eye exam a valuable window into overall cardiovascular health. Management focuses on blood pressure control in coordination with the guest's primary care provider, along with monitoring for any retinal changes that require direct treatment.
Retinal Neovascularization
In response to poor oxygen supply, the retina can attempt to compensate by growing new blood vessels, a process called neovascularization. Unfortunately, these new vessels are fragile, poorly formed, and prone to leaking or bleeding into the eye.
Neovascularization is a feature of advanced diabetic retinopathy and can also occur in other retinal vascular conditions. Left untreated, it can lead to vitreous hemorrhage, tractional retinal detachment, and severe vision loss. Treatment typically involves laser therapy, intravitreal injections, or a combination of both.
