Education and Training

Dr. Dietrich's path to ophthalmology is one of the most distinctive in the practice, shaped by academic excellence, military service, and training across multiple clinical disciplines.

Undergraduate and Medical Education

A Michigan native and proud Midwesterner, Dr. Dietrich is a first-generation college graduate who discovered his calling in medicine through a deep curiosity for science and a genuine passion for helping others. He graduated summa cum laude from Florida Atlantic University with a degree in biochemistry and went on to earn his medical degree from Florida State University, demonstrating from the earliest stages of his training the academic seriousness that has defined his career.

Military Service as a Flight Surgeon

Before completing his ophthalmology training, Dr. Dietrich served with distinction as a Flight Surgeon in the United States Air Force and Air National Guard, rising to the rank of Major. He provided care for pilots, guardsmen, and their families at bases across the United States, Turkey, and Qatar, supporting NATO operations, leading disaster response teams, and safeguarding aircrew during missions aboard the KC-135, C-17, and C-130. His military service sharpened his clinical expertise in high-pressure environments and instilled a deep commitment to humility, service, and purpose-driven care. During his service, Dr. Dietrich was recognized with numerous honors for his exceptional skill and leadership, including the Air Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Meritorious Unit Award, and the prestigious AFMC Operational Safety Flight Surgeon of the Year Award. These decorations reflect the trust placed in him to care for aircrew in mission-critical environments, an experience that now translates directly into the precise, reliable, and compassionate care he provides every guest.

General Surgery Residency

Dr. Dietrich completed a General Surgery residency at the University of Colorado, building a broad surgical foundation that continues to inform the precision and clinical judgment he brings to every ophthalmic procedure.

Ophthalmology Residency

Following his military service, Dr. Dietrich completed his Ophthalmology residency at Brown University, building a strong foundation in both surgical and medical eye care that prepared him for the full-scope clinical practice he brings to Boling Vision Center today.

There's truly nothing that compares to the moment when someone's vision is restored or significantly improved. It's an immediate and deeply meaningful impact. But more than that, I enjoy the relationships I build with my patients: being able to connect, build trust, and walk with them through their vision journey. That's the coolest part.

Community Involvement

Dr. Dietrich chose to join Boling Vision Center in part because of its mission-driven culture and genuine commitment to making eye care accessible to everyone in the community, not just those who can afford it.

Operation Sight

Dr. Dietrich actively participates in Operation Sight, the ASCRS Foundation's charitable cataract surgery program, volunteering his surgical expertise to provide free cataract surgery to uninsured patients who meet income eligibility requirements. His participation reflects a belief he carries from his military service: that the privilege of clinical skill comes with a responsibility to deploy it in the service of others.

Kindness to Prevent Blindness

Dr. Dietrich also participates in the Kindness to Prevent Blindness mobile eye care unit, providing free eye exams and prescription glasses to students across Elkhart and St. Joseph County schools. He believes that eye care should be accessible, compassionate, and proactive, and that showing up for the community's most vulnerable members is not optional for a practice that takes its values seriously.

A Philosophy of Care

Dr. Dietrich's approach to every guest relationship is grounded in two principles he carries with him from very different parts of his life.

"You don't know what you don't know." This guiding principle keeps him grounded and genuinely open to learning from every guest and every experience, a humility that makes him a better clinician and a more trustworthy partner in care.

"Think lightly of yourself and deeply of the world." A reminder, borrowed from Miyamoto Musashi, to stay humble, present, and connected to the larger purpose that gives the work its meaning.

Having experienced the healthcare system from many angles himself, Dr. Dietrich strives to make every guest's journey smoother, clearer, and more empowering. He sees trust as the foundation of every guest relationship and brings relatability, warmth, and genuine curiosity to each interaction.

Beyond the Practice

Dr. Dietrich lives in the Michiana area with his wife, Sarah, and their two sons, Killian and Crusade.

Outside of work, he enjoys traveling, with a particular fondness for Southern Germany, collecting vinyl records, and reading widely across world history, philosophy, and fiction.

A few things about Dr. Dietrich that guests sometimes find surprising: he served as a military flight surgeon and has logged flight hours himself, he is a lifelong Detroit Red Wings fan who still plays ice hockey, and he once worked at Geek Squad and still builds custom computers for fun. A provider with this range of interests, it turns out, brings a genuinely broad perspective to the exam room.
