Doctor of Optometry | Notre Dame & South Bend

Dr. Amy Layman is a native Hoosier who has built her career around a simple but powerful belief: that the best eye care is delivered by a provider who genuinely knows the person across from them. With over two decades of clinical experience and a warmth that guests describe consistently as the thing they remember most about their appointments with her, Dr. Layman is one of the most trusted and longstanding members of the Boling Vision Center team.

Clinical Focus

Dr. Layman practices full-scope optometry and is certified in the treatment and management of ocular disease, with particular expertise in an area that requires both advanced clinical skill and genuine patience with complexity. Her areas of clinical focus include:

  • Full-scope medical optometry
  • Ocular disease treatment and management
  • Difficult contact lens fittings, including keratoconus and post-traumatic corneal injuries
  • Comprehensive eye examinations
  • Glasses and contact lens prescriptions
  • Pre- and post-operative care

Dr. Layman's specialty in difficult contact lens fittings is a meaningful differentiator for guests who have struggled elsewhere to find adequate correction for complex corneal conditions. Her expertise in keratoconus and post-traumatic corneal injuries provides a level of clinical depth that makes a genuine difference in the visual outcomes and daily comfort of the guests she serves.

Education and Training

Dr. Layman's academic path reflects both the strength of Indiana's optometry programs and her own commitment to clinical excellence.

Undergraduate and Doctoral Education

Dr. Layman earned both her Bachelor's degree and her Doctor of Optometry degree from Indiana University, one of the most respected optometry programs in the country. She graduated with high honors in Optometry in 1998, a distinction that reflects the academic standard she has held herself to throughout her career.

Academic and Clinical Practice

Following her doctoral training, Dr. Layman joined the faculty at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, Department of Ophthalmology, where she both taught and saw patients. That dual role as educator and clinician gave her a depth of perspective that continues to enrich her practice today, and that is evident in the thoroughness and clarity she brings to every guest interaction.

The best part of my job is getting to know my patients on a personal level and seeing them return year after year.

Professional Memberships

Dr. Layman maintains active membership in the organizations that support clinical excellence and professional advancement in optometry at every level. Her current professional memberships include the American Optometric Association, the Indiana Optometric Association, and the North Central Optometric Society.

She also serves as Treasurer of the Northern Indiana Chapter of the Indiana Optometric Association, a leadership role that reflects her investment in the strength and cohesion of the regional optometric community.

Community Involvement

Dr. Layman's commitment to the Michiana community is expressed both through her volunteer work with Kindness to Prevent Blindness and through her deep personal investment in the community she and her family call home.

She volunteers for the K2PB mobile eye care unit, providing free eye exams and prescription glasses to students across Elkhart and St. Joseph County schools. For a provider whose practice is built around long-term relationships with the families of Michiana, the opportunity to reach children at the earliest stages of their visual development, before vision problems have a chance to affect their learning and their lives, is one she finds both meaningful and deeply consistent with why she chose this work in the first place.

Beyond the Practice

Dr. Layman and her husband, Geoff, a political science professor at the University of Notre Dame, are proud parents of three daughters: Grace, a student at Saint Mary's College, and Caroline and Kate.

Family and community are at the center of Dr. Layman's life outside the practice: she helps out with the PTO on her days off, serves as co-leader of Caroline and Kate's Girl Scout troop, and is a proud and enthusiastic fan of Notre Dame sports.

She joined Boling Vision Center because of its commitment to providing state-of-the-art treatment alongside compassionate care to guests across the Michiana area, a combination she recognized as the standard she had always held herself to and wanted to be part of sustaining.
