Sunglasses: Protect Your Vision From Harmful Rays

You know the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays (UVA and UVB) can damage your skin, but you may be unaware that these rays can also damage your eyes, eyelids and your vision.

Our Optique Eyewear department offers a wide variety of prescription and designer sunglasses to help protect your eyes from UV radiation. Our nationally trained and certified opticians can help you choose the best options (such as polarized or customized sunglasses) for your lifestyle and vision needs.

Your Eyes Can Get Sunburned

Temporary “sunburn of the eye,” photokeratitis, can occur when you are exposed to excessive amounts of UV radiation over a short time.

Symptoms Of Photokeratitis

  • Pain
  • Red eyes
  • Foreign body sensation
  • Gritty feeling in the eyes
  • Extreme sensitivity to light
  • Excessive tearing

Long-Term Effects Of UV Radiation On The Eyes

While photokeratitis symptoms are usually temporary, long-term exposure to UV rays can lead to an increased risk of developing:

  • Macular degeneration
  • Cataracts
  • Retina damage
  • Eyelid skin cancer
  • Premature aging around the eyes

The Right Sunglasses Can Protect Your Eyes From UV Radiation

Adults and children should wear sunglasses with UV protection when outdoors – even on cloudy or overcast days. Most people are surprised to learn that 40% of UV exposure occurs when they think the sun is not strong – when it’s not direct, bright sunlight.

The American Optometric Association recommends wearing polarized sunglasses that:

  • Block 99-100% of UV-A and UV-B radiation
  • Screen 75-90% of visible light
  • Are perfectly matched in color and free of distortion and imperfection
  • Have lenses that are gray for proper color recognition

Sunglass frames that wrap around your face will provide more protection for peripheral vision. Wearing a wide-brim hat will also protect your eyes.
